IGP Visits Borno State To Assess Security Situation And Evaluate Restoration Of Policing Service

The Inspector-General of Police, Ag.IGP Ibrahim Idris NPM, mni, on July 16, 2016 paid a one day working visit to Borno State to assess the security situation in the State and evaluate the North-East restoration of normalcy of policing activities as the Nigeria Police have developed a comprehensive organisational strategy to restore Police services in the towns and villages liberated from the Boko Haram insurgents.

On the entourage of the Inspector-General of Police’s assessment team were the Comptrollers-General of Immigrations, Alhaji Mohammed Baba, the Prisons Services, Alhaji Jafaru Ahmed, the Commandant-General Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps,  Abdullahi Gana, Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge Operations, DIG Joshak Habila, CP Peter Ogunyawo in charge the Police Mobile Force and Commanders of Police specialized teams.

As part of the visit, the IGP paid a courtesy call on the Governor of the State, His Excellency, Alhaji Kashim Shettima in his office. IGP told Governor Shettima that he was in the State as part of the North-East Police strategy to assess the security in the State and to facilitate the deployment of Police officers for the protection and security of the returning displaced persons as well as visit the IDP’s camps to evaluate the implementation of civil authority and appraise the security needs of the IDPs. The IGP donated some relief material to IDPs at Muna Garage Camp.

At the Police Headquarters, the IGP addressed the officers and men as well as personnel of other sister agencies where he assured them of the government determination to improve their welfare and commended them for their services to the nation. He promised that henceforth their allowances will be paid promptly.

The IGP also used the visit to flag off the Police Medical Service Outreach headed by AIG Kaumi Ahmadu. The Medical Outreach an initiative of IGP Idris towards ameliorating the health challenges of IDPs by rendering free medical services at some designated IDP camps across Borno State and distribution of handbill on security hints.

In response, Governor Shettima thanked the IGP for his visit and donations to the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs). He said that the appointment of the IGP was based on his sterling qualities. He therefore assured the Inspector-General of Police of the State’s cooperation and support to the Police.

The IGP also used the visit to pay a courtesy call on the Shehu of Borno, HRH Alh. Dr Abubakar Ibu Umar Garbai El-amiri Elkanemi where he emphasised the critical role of traditional rulers in community harmony and promised to collaborate with the traditional rulers in ensuring the security of the country.

IGP Idris while in Borno also visited the Military Formation at Maimaleri Barracks where he interacted with the Theatre Commander, Major-general Leo Irabor. The IGP stressed the need for inter-agency collaboration in achieving national goals especially in the restoration of peace and security in the North-East of Nigeria.
