Attention: Commissioner of Police, Plateau State
Subject: Concerns Over the Alleged Use of Police Powers for Political Intimidation in Jos East Constituency
Your Excellency, Governor Caleb Manaseh Mutfwang, and the Commissioner of Police, Plateau State,
We write this open letter to express our deep concern over what we perceive as the increasing use of police authority to intimidate, harass, and arrest individuals who openly criticise political leadership in Jos East Constituency.
Since the emergence of Rt. Hon. Isa Madaki Ajiji as the APC flag bearer for Jos East Constituency for the forthcoming general election, there have been allegations that individuals who politically criticise his leadership or express opposing views are being subjected to police arrests over matters that appear, on the surface, to be civil or political in nature.
We therefore respectfully call on Your Excellency and the Commissioner of Police to ensure that the police remain professional, impartial, and independent of partisan political interests. Political disagreement, criticism, and peaceful expression of opposing views should not, in a democratic society, become grounds for intimidation or arbitrary arrest.
Your Excellency, many of us celebrated your return to the APC with the expectation that it would strengthen the party and promote unity. However, we are deeply concerned that the alleged attempt to impose Rt. Hon. Isa Madaki Ajiji on the people of Jos East without a transparent and credible primary process could further divide the party and undermine the confidence of party members.
Jos East has produced respected leaders who have occupied important positions, including Speakers, Heads of Service, Vice-Chancellors, and other prominent offices. Throughout our political history, these leaders have faced criticism and public scrutiny. Yet political criticism has always been part of democratic participation and should not automatically be treated as a criminal matter.
We therefore appeal to Your Excellency, Mr. Governor, to intervene and ensure that no individual is permitted to use the influence of government or security agencies to silence legitimate political criticism in Jos East.
We also urge the Commissioner of Police, Plateau State, to uphold the constitutional rights of citizens and ensure that the police are not used as an instrument for settling political disagreements or civil disputes.
Where allegations of criminal conduct exist, they should be investigated fairly and in accordance with the law, irrespective of the political status of the persons involved.
Let it be clearly understood that our position is not an attack on any individual. It is a demand for justice, transparency, democratic participation, and respect for the rule of law.
We remain committed to peaceful political engagement and will continue to use lawful and constitutional means to challenge decisions that we believe are unjust or detrimental to the interests of the people of Jos East.
We respectfully call on all concerned authorities to act before these allegations further damage public confidence in the APC, the government, and the security institutions of Plateau State.
Yours faithfully,
Alh. Audu Adamu Sambo
Concerned Stakeholders and Citizens of Jos East Constituency
