The Benue State Government has commenced the rebuilding of Yelewata community in Guma Local Government Area, marking a major step toward restoring hope and stability to residents affected by the recent deadly attack that left more than 200 people feared dead.
The reconstruction effort, initiated under the leadership of Governor Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, forms part of the commitment of his administration to rehabilitate communities devastated by violence and resettle displaced families in a safer and more structured environment.
Yelewata community suffered widespread destruction following an attack reportedly carried out by armed Fulani marauders. The incident led to the loss of hundreds of lives, destruction of homes and property, and displacement of many families, drawing national concern and calls for urgent intervention.
In the wake of the tragedy, the Federal Government demonstrated solidarity with the people of Benue State as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu paid a condolence visit to the state, assuring residents of continued support toward restoring peace and assisting affected communities.
Earlier, the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, also visited the state to sympathize with victims and their families. During the visit, she announced a donation of ₦1 billion to support relief and rehabilitation efforts, alongside additional support from other institutions and humanitarian organizations.
As part of the recovery process, the Benue State Government has rolled out a comprehensive rebuilding plan designed to transform Yelewata into a well planned and secure settlement.
A project inspection tour conducted by Ohitty TV and Radio on Friday, March 6, 2026 confirmed that construction work is already underway, with the pilot phase comprising 62 housing units expected to be completed before the end of March 2026.
Beyond the pilot phase, the full reconstruction plan includes the development of over 360 residential apartments intended to accommodate displaced families and restore normalcy to the affected community.
In addition to residential housing, the project also includes the construction of critical social infrastructure such as a Primary School, an ultra-modern health centre, a warehouse, and a Town Hall, all designed to support education, healthcare delivery, economic activity, and community governance.
Recognizing the importance of security in the resettlement process, the government’s plan further provides for the establishment of two major security outposts within the community to strengthen surveillance and ensure the safety of residents.
The rebuilding initiative reflects the determination of Governor Hyacinth Alia to not only reconstruct homes destroyed by violence but also rebuild the social and economic foundations of communities affected by insecurity.
The ongoing reconstruction represents a turning point for displaced residents after months of grief and uncertainty. The emerging structures now stand as visible signs of recovery and the collective resolve to rebuild lives after tragedy.
