Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue state has reopened Yelewata Market, sparking hope in the hearts of residents who’ve been struggling to make ends meet since the violent attacks in June 2025. The market’s reopening is expected to jumpstart economic activities and improve livelihoods, especially for women who’ve been hit hard by the crisis.
The Governor made this announcement while receiving UN Deputy Secretary-General, Dr. Amina Mohammed, who’s in Benue State to assess the damage and show solidarity with the affected communities. Alia expressed gratitude to the UN for their unwavering support, which has brought relief to thousands of IDPs in Benue State.
Dr. Mohammed emphasized the importance of unity among Nigeria’s diverse ethnic groups, saying it’s the foundation for peace, growth, and development. She assured the Benue State Government that the UN will continue to support displaced persons and facilitate their safe return home.
The UN has also promised to introduce modern agricultural practices to help affected communities sustain themselves until it’s safe for them to return home. This initiative is expected to bring much-needed relief to families who’ve been struggling to make ends meet.
The Guma Local Government Area has suffered greatly, with over 200 lives lost in the June attack. The Chairman, Hon. Orwough Maurice, commended the Benue State Government and UN agencies for their prompt interventions.
Chief Bernard Shawa, the District Head of Nyiev, praised Governor Alia for standing with his people and drawing international attention to their plight. Women representatives also lauded the Governor and UN agencies for their humanitarian support.
Gov. Alia later took the UN delegation on a tour of ongoing construction projects, including dignified housing units and educational facilities at the IDPs Mega Camp. He pledged to provide additional classrooms to improve learning conditions for displaced children.
The Governor’s efforts have clearly resonated with the community, who see him as a champion of their cause. The UN’s involvement has also brought hope for a brighter future.
As the people of Yelewata begin to rebuild, the focus is on healing and recovery. The market’s reopening is a significant step towards restoring normalcy.
The international community is taking notice of Benue’s plight, and this could be a turning point for the state. With the UN’s support, there’s hope for a more stable and prosperous future.
The people of Yelewata are resilient, and with this support, they can overcome the challenges they’ve faced. The journey to recovery won’t be easy, but it’s a step in the right direction.
Gov. Alia’s leadership is being hailed as a beacon of hope, and the UN’s involvement is a testament to the global community’s commitment to supporting Nigeria.
As the situation continues to unfold, one thing is clear: the people of Yelewata are not alone, and there’s hope for a better tomorrow.
