Reps House Committee Describes Federal School Of Medical Laboratory Technology As Glorified Institution

Yakubu Busari

The Federal School of Medical Laboratory Technology (FSMLT) Jos has been described as a glorified institution that is yearning for attention.

The House of Representatives standing committee on health institutions has said it was not satisfied with the decaying infrastructure in the FSMLT.

Chairman of the committee Hon. Pascal Obi, made the statement in Jos while on oversight function to the school.

“We were here last year, we are here again and the institution has not really gone beyond what it was last year. There is nothing good about the school.

“We are not happy about that and so we want to find out what was the cause,” he said.

The chairman said they have collected documents containing lists of employed staff, financial records, and others from the provost, with a view at looking them.

“We have collected all the documents that we have asked them to make available to us. We will go through them.

“Our interest is to ensure that there is a better budgetary provision to this institution.

Hon. Obi expressed disappointment with the way and manner the provost handled their visit for oversight functions, he charged the provost to decentralize the running of the administration of the school.

He said the institution should be seen to be run as property of all Nigerians and not as private or personal property.

Member of the committee Hon. Amos Magaji, frowned at the attitude of the provost saying he must build and improve his relationship with the committee.

The school provost Dr. Sunday Etukudoh said all funds made available to him were, “not misappropriated.”

“We are happy that they came, to have seen how we are and where we want to go.

“The problem has been paltry allocation FOR capital appreciation, but it is our hope that the visit will address it,” he said.

Dr. Etukudoh appreciated President Buhari for his prioritization of schools with medical bias but urged that the Government should consider his school in terms of capital appreciation so as to put in place the required infrastructure.
