Irked by the rising spate of abscondment by members of the National Youth Service corps (NYSC),participants at a one day workshop have pledged to synergize with management of the scheme in Nasarawa state with the aimed of curbing the abscondment of corps members from their places of primary assignments.
This was the views of some participants during the opening ceremony of the 2021 NYSC Management/corps Employers Workshop with a theme “Optimizing the NYSC/Corps employers partnership for National development.
Mallam Madaki Rankama, a participant commended the NYSC for organizing the workshop, pointing out abscondment of corp members and amongst others issues raised by the NYSC DG, Brig. Gen. Shuaibu Ibrahim as a serious setback to the scheme.
He categorically explained that employers of corp members were those aiding abscondment of members from their places of assignments, calling for proper communication between the scheme and corp members.
Hajiya Bilkisu Adamu, in her contribution denied that the involvement of corps employers is not the crux of the matter rather corp members are the problem of themselves.
She explained that it is difficult for corps employers to aid or encourage abscondment of corp members who are posted to their establishments to offer their services.
“I suggest that his first clearance should not be considered or his allowance withheld and this may foist them to adjust”.
She sued for improved communication and details on numbers of corps members posted to an establishment as well ensure their areas of specialization meets the demand of the establishment.
Brig. Gen. Shuaibu Ibrahim,the Director General represented by Hajiya Habiba Bappah, Director, Human Resources Management (HRM), while declaring the workshop open ,described the workshop as an important engagement for both parties to continually enhance their capacities for effective and efficient synergy.
He listed some of the lapses to includes delay in applying, increasing rejection of corp members,not applying at all for the services of corps members and expecting them to be posted among others and called for improvement in management of corps posted to their establishments.
Mr Abdullahi Jikamshi, Coordinator of NYSC in the state said the impact of
- coronavirus and ways of carrying out activities in the NYSC had to change and it is in view of that the workshop is been organized in order to optimize the current situation and see how they can all work better.
