The Imo State Independent Electoral Commission, ISIEC, has made it known that only 16 political parties will be participating in the forthcoming Local Government Council Election exercise slated by the Imo State Governor, Sen.Hope Uzodinma, on the 12th of March 2022.
The Chairman of the ISIEC, Mrs. Ugochi Onyeka, made the disclosure while addressing Pressmen at the Commission’s Secretariat in Owerri, the Imo State Capital.
The ISIEC Boss, Mrs.Onyeka, who was represented by one of the Commissioners, Henry Adimelechi, explained that Imo State Independent Electoral Commission has discussed with the Inter-Party Advisory Council, IPAC, on their readiness and preparedness for the polls.
She said; “We are prepared and the timetable is ready. We shall be transparent and ready to conduct free, fair, and credible elections. We, therefore, urge all the political parties to get ready for the election”.
Mrs.Ugochi noted that there is no legal impediment that could mar the conduct of the Local Government Council elections, added that the Commission has no single challenge on the forthcoming polls.
According to her, “ISIEC had consulted different political parties and other relevant stakeholders therein we explained the election will be an equal participatory exercise.”
Onyeka further disclosed the local government council polls will take place at the Three Thousand, Five Hundred, and Twenty Three (3,523) polling units and Three Hundred and Five (305) Electoral wards.
A release shared during the briefing reads, “In accordance with subsection (1) of section 12, schedule IV of the Electoral Law No 5 of 2021 of Imo State and section 30(I) of Electoral Act, 2010 (as amended), notice is hereby given that Elections into the Local Government Council Chairmanship and Councilorship positions in the 27 Local Government Areas of Imo State will hold on Saturday, 12th day of March 2022, at 8 am.”
It further disclosed that nomination papers are to be delivered at the commission’s Head office, located at No. 21 Orlu road, Owerri.
Responding, the Imo State Chairman of Allied Peoples Party (APP), Edoziem Clinton, commended the Commission for fixing a date for the elections.
He called on them to hold a free and fair election so as to give everyone a sense of belonging.
It could be however, recalled that about three successive administrations in Imo State had gone and they failed to adventure into their conducting Local Government elections.
