With the resumption of tertiary institutions in Nasarawa this week, female students of the School of Nursing and Midwifery Lafia Nasarawa State have appealed to the governor, Abdullahi Sule to come to the rescue of female students of the school.
One of the students, a returning student who spoke to this medium while narrating her story said if not School of Nursing and Midwifery there are no schools in the North where male and female students shared the same hostel accommodation.
This, according to her makes the hostel more porous and unsecured for female students, especially at night.
She said the situation is worst during the night even with the presence of police headquarter intruders infiltrate the hostels which she said is congested due to insufficient bed space.
The student said not less than 6 to 8 students share a room, but the school principal Ngari Solomon when contacted said the situation has improved.
“The movement of students of Midwifery to the new structure in Dalhatu Araf Specialists Hospital has reduced the encumbrances faced by students over accommodation”.
Solomon explained that with the COVID-19 protocol of social distance only four students are accommodated in a room to avoid a breach of safety measures of coronavirus pandemic.
On the accreditation of courses in the institution, Ngari Solomon explained that all courses offered in the School secured full accreditation in September 2019.
The courses, according to him includes Anatomy, Physics, Medical surgery, Nursing, Foundation of Nursing, Community Health, and Physiology.
On the number of teachers, the principal averred that the school has a total of 64 teachers, which he said are enough for the students.
The principal reeled out the major challenges facing the School to include an acute shortage of logistics to convey student outreach.
“We have only one 33 bus seater that is on and off throughout the season”.
He attested the entire school including hostels and classrooms has been fumigated even before the re-opening of tertiary institutions.
It would be recalled that late governor, Aliyu Akwe Doma expended a huge amount of money for the building of befitting classrooms and hostels accommodation for male and female which was later given to Nasarawa state police to serves as the command headquarters by the immediate past governor, Umaru Tanko Al-Makura.
The handing over of the edifice to the Nigerian police marks the beginning of the trepidation faced by students leading to the accommodation of both male and female students in one hostel.
