Court Extends Tenure of Council Chairmen In Nasarawa State To 2 Years- ALGON Counsel

Following the prolong wrangling of tenure elongation between the Nasarawa State House of Assembly and elected Local Government officials under the auspices of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria ,Nasarawa state wing, the High Court sitting in Lafia, Nasarawa state capital has ruled in favoured of elected council chairmen.

Counsel to ALGON, Barrister (Miss) Mary Onyeka gave the hint during a press conference held at the press centre in Lafia.

The Counsel to the chairman of Awe Local Government, Ahmed Aliyu and twelve others said; “I’m briefing you today in relation to the verdict of Justice Aisha Ahmed of the High Court 3 sitting in Lafia extending the one year tenure of Local Government to two years dated 15/072015”.

Mary Onyeka, the led counsel ALGON described the one year tenure by the state House of Assembly as an aberration of the nation’s constitutional provision, constitutional provisions were not follow by the lawmakers, She added.

It could be recalled that the immediate past House of Assembly members dissolved the current council chairmen after the expiration of their one year tenure, This cause rift between the executive and legislative arm of Government, the lingering crisis over tenure elongation has been existing since 2012 under the reign of former Governor, Aliyu Akwe Doma and Assembly.

The dissolution of elected council officials on 3/11/2012 created a serious crack in the ruling People’s Democratic Party in the state, the tenure furore was challenged by the elected chairman of Nasarawa Local Government as of then, the victory of Barrister Sani Bawa at the Court prompted concerned citizens in the state to head to court of appeal in Makurdi.
