Bridge Collapse In Nasarawa, Giza Community Receives Assurance Of Govt Immediate Action

Rabiu Omaku

The Nasarawa State Commissioner  Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, Princess Dr. Margaret Elayo, has assured the residents of Giza community of prompt Government intervention in response to the recent collapse of  Kalach Bridge.

She gave the hint during an assessment visit by the Commissioner, Princess Dr. Margaret Elayo evaluated the damage to the crucial bridge that connects Giza to Keana town in Keana Local Government Area.

The bridge collapsed after enduring significant damage from torrential rains, which had already washed away half of its structure, posing a serious safety hazard for both motorists and pedestrians.

The situation worsened with another heavy downpour recently, leading to the complete washout of the bridge and further complicating movement for residents.

Many road users resorted to using ladders to navigate the unsafe terrain, while others waded through the floodwaters to transport their farm products to the other side.

Community members expressed their concerns during Princess Elayo’s visit, stressing the urgent need for action to prevent accidents and ensure safe passage for goods and services.

In her remarks, Princess Dr. Margaret Elayo highlighted the purpose of her visit, stating, “Governor Abdullahi Sule received the distress call regarding bridge collapse, and he dispatched us to assess the site for immediate intervention.

I assure you that the information I gather will be presented to the Government, and we will work closely with relevant stakeholders to initiate repairs or, if necessary, construct a new bridge.”

Additionally, she indicated that the contractor responsible for the bridge’s initial construction would face scrutiny based on her upcoming findings.

She urged residents living in flood-prone areas to seek safer temporary accommodations, as forecasts from the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet) indicate further heavy rainfall, potentially leading to additional flooding in the area.
