Women Group Raises Alarm Over Increase Of Gender Based Violence In Jigawa

A coalition of concerned women, struggling for women’s Rights and social justice, popularly known as Jigawa Women of Resilience has called for speedy trial of cases with regards to Gender Based violence, a Ban on Child Labour, and trafficking.

The chairperson of the coalition Hajiya Ummi Jibril Abba made the call, shortly after a review meeting with stakeholders held on Sunday at state Library Dutse. 

The Coalition also called for relevant stakeholders working around Gender-based violence to puts more effort to ensure that the menace has been reduced as this will indicate effective implementation of the VAPP Law and reduce the constant increase of sexual harm against boys and girls.

The chairperson added that, after the meeting, the group understand the need for establishing more Sexual Assault Referral centers in the state considering many have been victims of the violence.

The Coalition also appeals for the Government to map out plans for an aggressive enlightenment campaign against street hawking by the girl-child as part of the modalities for effective enforcement of the ban on street hawking and child labour.   Enforcing the ban on street hawking, tracking and other forms of child labour will if not bring an end, reduce sexual assault and other harm to Children.

While making remarks on the roles of parents and caregivers, the coalition urged them to puts all efforts towards protecting their children as the days are evil highlighting the recent disheartening man slaughter vested on an innocent five-year-old boy that resulted in Losing his life in the state.

According to her, women’s Rights and Protection Alternative (WRAPA) as an umbrella, spend a huge amount of money on capacity building through training upon training for Traditional and Religious leaders, Ministry, Department, and Agencies including about 80 women who form the Jigawa Women of Resilience to meet with yearning and aspiration most especially on Gender Base Violence and related matters in an effort to build a better society in Jigawa State.

The group then urged all stakeholders to complement Government efforts in the fight against Gender-Based Violence by calling for an investment of adequate attention and resources on GBV issues before it dents our integrity and community security.
