Introduction

Nigeria, a country rich in cultural diversity and natural resources, has been plagued by governance issues since its independence in 1960. Bad governance has manifested in various forms, including corruption, lack of transparency, and human rights violations, leading to widespread poverty, insecurity, and disenfranchisement among its citizens. At the forefront of efforts to combat these challenges are the youth, who constitute a significant portion of the Nigerian population. This article is set to explore the critical role of youth in ending bad governance in Nigeria, highlighting their potential as change agents and the various mechanisms through which they can influence positive reforms.

Understanding Bad Governance in Nigeria

Before examining the role of youth, it is essential to understand what constitutes bad governance. In Nigeria, the indicators for bad  include:

1. Corruption

Deep-rooted corruption has hindered effective governance, with public officials often prioritizing personal gain over the welfare of citizens.

2. Inefficiency

Abysmal infrastructure and inadequate public services stem from mismanagement and lack of accountability.

3. Human Rights Violations

The government’s disregard for human rights, especially during protests, has led to brutal crackdowns on dissent.

4. Poor Economic Management

Policies that favor the elite have resulted in high unemployment rates and widened the gap between the rich and poor.

5. Lack of Participation

Disengagement of the citizenry in the political process undermines democracy.

These factors have fostered an environment where bad governance prevails, leading to massive disillusionment among young people who desire change.

 The Demographic of Nigerian Youth

Nigeria is home to one of the youngest populations globally, with over 60% of its approximately about 250 million citizens  are under the age of 25 to 40. This demographic reality presents both challenges and opportunities:

Challenges

High unemployment rates, limited access to education, and inadequate health care services have left many youths feeling marginalized and hopeless. This gory situation has orchestrated all kinds of social vices in the country:

-Opportunities

A large, youthful population can be a driving force for innovation, creativity, and social change, particularly if harnessed effectively. But the quasi-democratic atmosphere of the country has wilted the infinite struggles of the masses for a desired lifestyle.

Historical Context of Youth Activism in Nigeria

Historically, Nigerian youth have played pivotal roles in various movements against oppression. From the Nigerian Students’ Movement during the 1970s to the more recent EndSARS movement against police brutality, youths have demonstrated their capability as catalysts for change. These movements have inspired a new generation to engage politically and socially, using technology and social media to mobilize support and demand accountability.

Empowering Youth to Combat Bad Governance

Education and Awareness

One of the most significant ways youth can combat bad governance is through education. Knowledge about civic rights, the constitution, and government operations equips young people to demand accountability from their leaders. Several initiatives can enhance awareness:

a. Civic Education Programs

Schools and universities should incorporate courses on civic responsibilities, governance, and leadership that will nurture leaders from their formative years to adulthood.

b. Workshops and Seminars

Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) can organize events that educate youth on their rights, the electoral process, and corruption’s impact on society.

c. Social Media Campaigns

The digital age has revolutionized communication. Engaging campaigns that promote awareness can spread like wildfire among the youth.

Political Participation

Youth must actively engage in political processes to ensure their voices are heard:

1. Voting

Encouraging eligible young people to participate in elections is crucial. Increasing voters turnout can unseat corrupt politicians and introduce new leaders committed to reform.

2. Running for Office

More young people should consider running for public office to bring fresh perspectives to governance.

3. Advocacy

Engaging in advocacy work to influence policy change can have a significant impact. Youth-led organizations can lobby for reforms, transparency, and accountability.

4. Community Organizing

Harnessing the power of collective action can amplify youth voices:

a. Grassroots Movements

Organizing local communities to address governance issues empowers youths to connect with citizens and advocate for change.

b. Collaborations with Civil Society Groups

Partnering with established organizations can enhance the youth’s capacity to enact change.

c. Volunteering

Actively participating in community development initiatives showcases the youth’s commitment to improving governance locally.

Digital Activism

In an era defined by technology, social media serves as a powerful tool for mobilization and awareness:

1. Online Campaigns

Utilizing platforms like WhatsApp, Twitter,  Facebook, and Instagram can raise awareness about governance issues, drawing attention to injustices and malpractices.

2. E-Petitions

Platforms for collective online petitions can spur action from authorities, showcasing public discontent over governance failures.

3. Crowdsourcing Ideas

The youth can use online platforms to gather and share ideas for governance reforms, ensuring a more inclusive approach to policymaking.

Building Alliances

Youth should seek alliances with like-minded groups, including civil society, international organizations, and progressive politicians

1. Networking

Establishing connections with other activists can lead to knowledge exchange and strategic collaborations.

2. Global Solidarity

Engaging with global youth movements can draw international attention to local governance issues, putting pressure on the Nigerian government to implement reforms.

3. Intergenerational

Dialogue Collaborating with older generations can provide valuable insights and lessons learned, creating a unified front against bad governance.

Challenges Faced by Youth in Their Activism

Despite the potential for youth to effect change, they face numerous challenges:

1. Repression

The government has a history of violently suppressing protests and dissent, making activism dangerous.

2. *Lack of Resources

Many youth-led initiatives struggle with funding and resources, limiting their impact.

3. Disillusionment

Persistent corruption and failure of leadership may lead to apathy and disengagement among young people.

4. Divisions

Ethnic and religious divisions can undermine solidarity among the youth, resulting in a fragmented movement.

Case Studies of Youth-Led Change:

EndSARS Movement

The EndSARS movement is a prime example of youthful activism changing Nigeria’s political landscape. Launched in 2017, it gained momentum in October 2020 when protests erupted nationwide against police brutality and extortion by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

Significance

Mobilization: Utilizing social media, Nigerian youths quickly mobilized, drawing attention to their plight and garnering international support.

Government Response: The protests led to the disbandment of SARS and highlighted the need for comprehensive police reforms.

Awareness: The movement shed light on the consequences of bad governance and police brutality, leading to a growing demand for accountability.

Youth in Politics

The rise of young politicians like Imma Getso (running for YPP Vice Presidential Candidate ) and the emergence of youth-led political parties illustrate the shift toward political engagement. These young leaders bring fresh ideas and commitments to transparency and governance reform.

Conclusion

The role of youth in ending bad governance in Nigeria cannot be overstated. With their energy, creativity, and passion for change, young people can challenge the status quo and push for a better future. Through education, political participation, community organizing, digital activism, and building alliances. Nigerian youth can become catalysts for significant reform. However, achieving this requires overcoming challenges, uniting across divides, and fostering a culture of accountability and transparency in governance. The vision of a prosperous Nigeria lies within the hands of its youth, who must rise to the occasion and demand the government they deserve.
