The Nasarawa State Governor, Engineer Abdullahi A. Sule, has directed the state Ministry of Justice to compile the list of inmates who qualify for the prerogative of mercy as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary and the 30th anniversary of the creation of Nasarawa State.

Governor Sule gave the directive in his Independence Day address, where he called on the beneficiaries of the gesture to regard the opportunity as a fresh start and make positive contributions to society.

The Governor urged those who would benefit from the prerogative of mercy to embrace reform, become responsible members of society and contribute meaningfully to the development and nation-building efforts of the country.

He said the gesture was in keeping with the spirit of the Independence anniversary and the need to give deserving individuals an opportunity to reintegrate into society and rebuild their lives.

The Governor, who inspected a parade by personnel of the Nigeria Police Force and other paramilitary agencies as part of the anniversary activities, used the occasion to highlight some of the achievements recorded by his administration across various sectors.

According to him, his administration has continued to give attention to security, healthcare delivery, the welfare of civil servants, infrastructure development and the construction and rehabilitation of rural roads, among other areas.

He said the administration remained committed to improving the living conditions of residents and creating an environment conducive to economic and social development across the state.

Governor Sule also paid tribute to the founding fathers of Nasarawa State, commending them for their foresight and sacrifices that contributed to the creation and development of the state.

He equally acknowledged the contributions of successive administrations that had governed Nasarawa State since its creation, noting that each administration had played a role in laying the foundation for the state’s growth.

As Nasarawa State marks 30 years since its creation, the Governor expressed optimism that future leaders would build on the achievements of previous administrations and further advance the development of the state.

He called on citizens to continue to support the development of the state and Nigeria as a whole, stressing the importance of unity, peace, responsible citizenship and collective efforts in building a prosperous future.

The Independence anniversary parade featured personnel from the Nigeria Police and other paramilitary formations, adding colour to the celebrations as the state joined other parts of the country to commemorate Nigeria’s 66 years of independence.

The State Commissioner Justice, Barrister Isaac Danladi confirmed that 23 inmates benefitted from the gesture of the State Governor, Abdullahi Sule so as to reintegrate the inmates to the society.

The Solicitor General of the State, Justice Justina Allu said 23 inmates will benefit from the yet-to-be-implemented process among the inmates.

“We will ensure that we complete other processes surrounding the prerogative of mercy of the 23 inmates”.

She said the first yardstick they considered was inmates with mild offences and those who have few months to complete their fail term for the 22 inmates while one among them will also complete his jail term.
