…urges residents to remain calm
The Sokoto State Government has assured residents that it is closely monitoring security developments across the state and has put in place adequate measures to protect lives and property amid reports that notorious bandit leader Bello Turji has acquired sophisticated weapons and engaged mercenaries to train his fighters.
The Special Adviser to Governor Ahmed Aliyu on Security Matters, retired Col. Ahmed Usman, gave the assurance while responding to questions from journalists on concerns surrounding the alleged activities of the bandit kingpin.
According to him, security agencies are fully aware of developments in banditry-prone areas and are taking proactive steps to counter any emerging threats.
“Security is a continuous process, and as a government, we take every intelligence report seriously. We are working closely with the military, police, intelligence agencies, and other security formations to ensure that criminal elements do not have the opportunity to threaten the peace and stability of our state,” Usman said.
The security adviser highlighted the efforts of Governor Ahmed Aliyu’s administration in strengthening the state’s security architecture since assuming office.
“Governor Ahmed Aliyu has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the security of lives and property. Since assuming office, his administration has consistently provided critical logistical support to security agencies operating in the state, including operational vehicles, motorcycles, communication equipment, fuel supplies, and other essential resources to enhance their operational efficiency,” he stated.
Usman further disclosed that the governor had approved substantial financial interventions to support security operations, intelligence gathering, and community-based security initiatives aimed at combating banditry and other criminal activities.
“These efforts have significantly improved the capacity of security personnel to respond swiftly and effectively to security challenges,” he added.
He noted that criminal groups often deploy propaganda and misinformation to spread fear among the public, warning residents against allowing such tactics to undermine confidence in security agencies.
“While we will never underestimate any threat, we are confident in the capacity and preparedness of our security forces to confront and neutralise criminal elements. The sustained operations being carried out by security agencies have continued to put bandits under pressure and limit their ability to operate freely,” he said.
The retired military officer called on residents to remain vigilant and continue supporting security agencies with credible information.
“I therefore urge residents to remain calm, vigilant, and law-abiding, while continuing to support security agencies with credible and timely information. The government of Governor Ahmed Aliyu remains fully committed to providing all necessary support to ensure lasting peace, security, and development across Sokoto State,” he said.
Usman reiterated that the state government would sustain its collaboration with security agencies and relevant stakeholders to strengthen security across the state and protect communities from criminal activities.
