Vice President Kashim Shettima on Thursday visited Yola, Adamawa State, to condole with the family of the late elder statesman and former Governor of the old Gongola State, Bamanga Muhammad Tukur, describing his death as the end of a life of service and dedication.
Shettima, who led a Federal Government delegation to Adamawa on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, also commiserated with the Adamawa State Government, the Adamawa Emirate Council and the people of the state over the death of Tukur.
Tukur, the Tafidan Adamawa, died on September 12, 2026, at the age of 90 and was buried in Yola the following day after funeral prayers at the Lamido’s Palace.
During the visit, Shettima described Tukur’s death as a major loss to Adamawa, Nigeria and Africa, noting his contributions to public service, politics, business and economic development.
The Vice President recalled Tukur’s service as Governor of the old Gongola State, Minister of Industries and National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, as well as his leadership of the Nigerian Ports Authority from 1975 to 1982.
He also recognised Tukur’s role in promoting African economic development through the African Business Roundtable and the NEPAD Business Group.
Shettima conveyed President Tinubu’s and the Federal Government’s condolences to the Tukur family and the people of Adamawa, saying the late elder statesman’s contributions to Nigeria and Africa would remain part of his enduring legacy.
Tukur’s death has continued to attract condolences from political leaders, traditional rulers and other Nigerians.
In honour of the former governor, Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri had earlier declared three days of mourning across Adamawa State.
