The Former Plateau State Governor, Senator Dr. Joshua Chibi Dariye, has condemned in strong terms renewed attacks on some communities in Bokkos Local Government area which left over 20 people dead and several others injured describing it as barbaric, unwarranted and unacceptable.
According to a statement, Senator Dariye described the attack by gunmen suspected to be Fulani militia on Ruwi, Mangor, Manguna, Hurti, Tadai and Daffo Communities as one too many which was highly condemnable requiring more proactive measures by security agencies to nib it in the bud.
He lamented that the brazen attack on innocent and defenceless people by the marauding herdsmen coming at a time when they were accessing their lands ahead of the farming season was a deliberate attempt to instill fear in the predominantly farming populace.
“The killing of 11 mourners in Ruwi last week and similar killings by the same blood-thirsty merchants of death in Mangor, Manguna, Hurti, Tadai and Daffo in one fell swoop where another 10 lost their lives is highly condemnable, senseless and provocative”.
“The systematic decimation of Bokkos people which casualties have risen up to 3,000 in the last two years, is a calculated attempt aimed at wiping them away from their ancestral lands which, for all intents and purposes, is the target of expansionists who are bent on taking the people’s lands”.
” These development if not put in check by government, it will lead to food crisis which is already at an alarming stage. Bokkos is an agrarian Community where most of its population indulge in farming and if these ceaseless attacks continues unabated, it’s going to affect their sources of livelihood”
While commiserating with the families of those that lost loved ones, Senator Dariye urged the authorities to direct the National Emergency Management Agency( NEMA) and the State Emergency Management Agency(SEMA) as well as the Red Cross and other national and international humanitarian agencies to provide relief to the displaced persons.
The former Governor, who commended security agencies for their swift response in curtailing the attacks, urged them to go after the perpetrators of the dastardly act and make them face the full wrath of the law.
He implored the people to establish Vigilante and Neighborhood Watch to complement government efforts, emphasizing that it was high time citizens stood up to defend themselves and their lands from the marauding terrorists.
Senator Dariye called on the Federal Government to expedite action on the establishment of a military formation in Bokkos which had already been approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a means to stop the incessant attacks in Bokkos and neighboring communities.
