Say No To Medical Jamboree, Maternal And Infant Mortality, NMA Advice FG To Do The Needful

The Nigerian Medical Association Nasarawa state branch has protest against medical jamboree, the Association also say no to maternal and infant mortality, urging the Federal government to do the needful among others.

The statement marks this year physician week, doctors as doctors protested by carrying different placards with inscriptions such as, we say no to medical tourism, say no to maternal and infant mortality.

The Nigeria Medical Association appealed to the federal government to provide adequate fund to the health sector in order to tackle the infrastructural decay in the nation’s  hospitals in order to ensure quality health care service delivery.

Dr.Christopher Edeh, the state chairman of the association made the call on Wednesday while addressing journalists at the 2016 physician week with the theme “Health Care in a frail Economy, Challenges and Way forward in Keffi, Keffi local government area of the state

He said that if government at all level will give its topmost priority to the health sector through provision of adequate fund to the health sector, it would not only improve on the health status of Nigerians but would also discourage medical tourism to other countries of the world.

“The Physician week is an annual event taking place not only in Nasarawa state but across the 36 state including FCT with the aim of assessing health care intervention as well as offering free medical services to the people in order to improve on their health status.

“There are many problems or challenges facing the nation’s health sector as most of the people especially the masses can not afford or access quality health care service delivery which had affected their health negatively.

“There is also a problem of poor manpower in the health sector and even though those doctors that have been trained have not been employed by the government which is hampering effective health care service delivery in the country.

“It is in view of this, I want to appeal to the federal government to fund the health sector adequately in order to tackle the infrastructural decay in the nation hospitals so as to tackle the health challenges of Nigerians and to discourage medical tourism in the country,” he said.

Edeh also make a case for the government to make National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) accessible to every Nigerians in order to fight maternal and infant mortality in the country.

He, however, commended Gov.Tanko Al-makura for his health intervention programme which have direct bearing on the health and living condition of the people of the state and called for its sustenance.

Also speaking, Dr Attah Peter, the Assistant Secretary-General,(North Central),National body of NMA reinstated the commitment of the association to continue to key into project that have direct bearing on the lives of the doctors and other Nigerians.

In his remarks, The Medical Director of Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Keffi, Nasarawa state, Dr. Giyan Joshua –Ndom assured the association of the centre’s support at all the time .

Saying the support ensure effective health service delivery in the state and the country at large. Joshua –Ndom, who was represented by Dr.Samuel Luka, the centre’s head of Clinical Service advised the doctors to be hardworking while discharging their duties in the interest of the health of the people and for the overall development of the country.
