Red Cross Official Says 15,000 Livestock Would Be Vaccinated In Nasarawa

The Officials of the International Committee  of Red Cross (ICRC) have said about 15, 000 livestock in Awe and Keana Local Government Areas of Nasarawa State has been shortlisted for vaccination against any outbreak of animal diseases in the state

The Head of Livestock in the country,Mr. Abubakar Madi revealed this at the livestock stakeholders’ conference in Lafia, buttressed that the vaccination exercise would hold from  December 1, to December 17, 2021, in Awe and Keana Local Government Areas of the state respectively.

He said two Local Governments Councils were chosen for the exercise because of the large population of herders who were displaced from other areas due to upheaval, adding that the conference was meant for veterinarians, pastoralists and other stakeholders from the two Local Government Areas with the sole motive to exchange notes ahead of the vaccination exercise.

He opined that ICRC has concluded arrangements to begin vaccination of 15, 000 livestock in Nasarawa State, he asserted that ICRC carried out several humanitarian interventions in the state including the deworming of over 200,000 livestock.

Communication Field Officer of ICRC, Mrs. Patience Nanklin Yawus Jos Sub delegation, explained that the organisation had assisted a lot of victims of communal violence in the state, in addition, disclosed that ICRC Jos sub-delegation office was working in all the states of the North-Central zone

She confirmed that the organisation usually interfaces with the victims of crises to ascertain their areas of needs with the view of assisting them with relief materials and restoring their means of livelihood as well as part of plans lined up to assist and restore their livelihood.

Mr. Nuhu Bunu, Permanent Secretary, Nasarawa State Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources commended ICRC for their numerous humanitarian activities in the state,  he reiterated the commitment and the determination of the state government to collaborate with ICRC and other partners toward ensuring better welfare for citizens.

He lauded ICRC for donating over N15 million worth of veterinary drugs to the ministry and promised to use the drugs for the purpose it was meant.

Director of Livestock Services,Mr. Emmanuel Sunday explained that the state government would do everything humanly possible to ensure the production of healthy animals and healthy meat in the state.

 

He stated that lack of veterinary doctors, lack of functional vehicles, inadequate veterinary laboratory and hospitals as some of the challenges facing his department
