Anambra Police Command said on Monday it had arrested, a police sergeant who allegedly supplied arms and ammunition to state cultists.
The command was responding to a trending social media (Facebook) post, alleging staff was arming a sectarian group believed to be responsible for most killings in the state.
The post alleged that the policeman was a member of a feared Viking cult group and that he was seen in a shootout.
The command’s public relations officer, DSP Toochukwu Ikenga, said the officer was identified and arrested as the investigation began.
“The attention of Anambra Police Command has been drawn to a trending social media story alleging the involvement of a police sergeant in the illegal supply of weapons and ammunition to a criminal gang in Awka.
“The alleged police sergeant has been identified and is already in custody for questioning.
“The command ensures that the outcome of the investigations into the matter will be made public and reiterates its commitment to be accountable to all personnel serving in the command,” he said.
