A man identified as Amos Paul is in police custody in Ondo State over allegations that he burned his 10-year-old daughter’s private part with a hot pressing iron as punishment for wetting the bed.
The suspect resides in Unaun, Upenme, within the Owo Local Government Area, where the incident reportedly took place before it was brought to the attention of law enforcement on Thursday.
According to police, the young girl suffered serious injuries as a result of the alleged assault and was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Owo, where she remains under medical care.
However, operatives from the ‘A’ Division in Owo reportedly moved quickly to the scene after the report was made and took the suspect into custody without resistance.
In a statement released on Thursday, the command’s Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, disclosed that the matter has since been handed over to the Gender Unit for further discreet investigation.
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Felix Ohagwu, condemned the suspect’s alleged conduct in strong terms.
“This is a cruel, inhumane act that cannot be tolerated in any form,” he stated, adding that the command remains resolute in shielding children and vulnerable members of society from abuse and exploitation.
Ohagwu further appealed to residents to speak up whenever they witness or suspect cases of child abuse or domestic violence, pledging that the command would continue to hold offenders accountable under the law.
