The Zonal Coordinator, Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Bauchi zone Professor Nanmwa Voncir has called on Nigerians to rise up and stop the Federal Government satanic plan of privatization of public universities in the country.

According to Professor Voncir he said that, “we shall do everything within our powers to stop the drift towards privatization of public universities in Nigeria. The current industrial peace on Universities should not be endangered by the actions of the Federal Government”.

Addressing a press conference  at the ASUU secretariat of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) Bauchi Professor Voncir said that federal universities are being faced with the challenges of inadequate funding especially personal and overhead cost.

He said in the years past, “the federal government of Nigeria has continued to cut down the funding of universities, especially the capital and overhead cost leading to dilapidated infrastructure, equipment and facilities”.

He said if not because of Tetfund public universities and indeed public tertiary education would have been a forgotten issue or at best they would have been shadows of themselves or glorified secondary schools.

The Zonal Coordinator lamented that as a result of inadequate funding universities cannot pay the monthly salaries of their staff as and when due. “We view this as an attempt by federal government to start the privatisation of the Universities”.

He further stated that the closure of all university staff primary schools and the sacking of the staff was a direct confrontation with the union saying they would soon react to that because the schools were established based on negotiation and agreement with the Union in 1992 to date whole urging the Federal government to abide by the agreements rules and regulations.
