Nasarawa Has The Highest Maternal Mortality Rate In North-Central—Health Commissioner

The state commissioner for health Dr. Daniel Iya has unveiled that Nasarawa state has the highest maternal mortality higher than the national average in North-central zone.

He gave the charge while answering questions on the incumbent administrations “Save one million Lives” a programme initiated by the former regime of President Goodluck Jonathan.

“Nasarawa like any other state got 1.5m dollars under the “Save One Million Lives”.

Honorable commissioner hinted that the state government is doing it possible best in preventing death during birth as he said this will only be achievable through equipping general hospitals as well Primary Health Care in some hard-to reach communities.

Daniel opined that over 7000 Primary Health Care Center, PHC, are in existence in the state as he confirmed that few are dysfunctional.

He hinted that the state government would spend millions of naira for the renovation of Comprehensive Health Care Arikya destroyed during the recent communal unrest in the locality.

While answering questions over the acute shortage of manpower that rocked public hospitals, the commissioner confided the gory situation and said frantic measures have been taken to tackle the situation.

Speaking on the non-accreditation of School of Nursing which lead to the closure of the institution, Dr. Iya asserted that the institution has undergoes it accreditation.

He also confirmed the outbreak of Lassa fever in recent times; saying prolific steps were adopted against future occurrence.

While commenting on the proliferation of illegal health centres and activities of quacks in Karu, the health commissioner says the wrath of the law awaits operators of such health centres

Saying only well-equipped private hospitals and clinics are certified and license issued to proprietors.
