Nasarawa Emerges Champion of North Central Basic Education School Sports Competition

Nasarawa State, today, emerged winners of the Boys’ football event of the North Central Zonal Basic Education School Sports competition organized by the Nasarawa State Universal Basic Education Board, NSUBEB.

The event, which featured football, handball and volleyball for both genders, saw Nasarawa State’s U-13 Boys’ football team beat Kogi State by 1-0 in the final, decided at the Football pitch of the Federal University of Lafia, to be crowned champions.

The team earlier beat Plateau State by 1-0 in their first match, on the opening day of the competition on Monday.

Nasarawa State also emerged victorious in the Girls’ Volleyball game, while Kogi State scooped the gold medal in the sport’s Boys’ Category.

FCT, Abuja, was crowned champion of the Boys’ Handball sport.

The first and second triumphant States will represent the Zone in each team sport featured in at the forthcoming National Basic Education School Sports Competition in Delta State later in the year.

Speaking to the press shortly after the closing ceremony, Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State, represented by the NSUBEB Chairman, Dr. Kassim Muhammad Kassim, congratulated team Nasarawa and other participating States for their exemplary performance and sportsmanship.

He commended them for their commitment to excellence, and appreciated the coaches, officials, parents and stakeholders whose collective efforts made the championship memorable.

Kassim further pledged Governor Sule and Nasarawa State Government’s sustained investment in talent discovery and sports development, noting that nurturing young athletes at the foundational level remains critical to building a healthy and productive future generation.

He described the competition as a resounding success in identifying promising talents for national exposure, reaffirming the NSUBEB’s mandate to promote sports as a veritable tool for character building and educational development.

Highlights of the event were presentations of individual awards, medals and trophies to the distinguished teams.
