Jigawa Partner With NGOs To Improve Hadejia River For Irrigation Purpose

The Jigawa state government has started consulting with nongovernmental organizations over the Hadejia River to work together for the improvement of water to flow in the River for fishing and irrigation development within Jigawa, Yobe and some parts of Bauchi State.

The Deputy Governor His Excellency Alhaji Umar Namadi who was represented by the state Commissioner Of Environment Malam Ibrahim Baba Chaichai stated this while speaking at the flag-off of the distribution of some working tools to dozens of non-governmental organizations of self-help groups from 21 local government areas living around the river line which was held in Miga local government area of Jigawa state.

He said, under the new approach, the state government will also use the opportunities in tackling the perennial flood destroying lives and properties along the area.

The commissioner of Environment Hon Ibrahim Baba Chaichai said the beneficiary local government areas are from Bauchi, Yobe and Jigawa state.

According to him, the working tools distributed to the Selfhelp groups are meant for the members of the groups to clear Typha grass blocking the Riverbank which blocks water flow to the River.

“Even though many factors are causing the shrinking of water in the Hadejia River, but the Typha grass is one of it, and we have resolved to join hands with community groups to locally tackle the challenges within our power.”

In his parts the council chairman of Miga LGA, Mohammadu Abubakar Agufa urged the beneficiaries to make use of these materials to serve the purpose of which they were provided for.
