- Ban All Forms Of Mining In The Municipality
The Govt. of Imo State through the Ministry of Environment, was on last Friday, June 5th 2020, joined the whole world in the celebration of World Environmental Day.
The ceremony was piloted by the Commissioner for Environment, Hon.Dr.Iyke Njoku, who took journalists round across the capital city of Owerri, as the train further navigated to Avu Automobile Mechanic Village in Owerri Area of Imo State, where the Commissioner and his crew from the ministry commenced the ritual of trees planting as part of enhancing the biodiversity in the ecological system of the state.
Speaking, Commissioner Njoku, disclosed that he have suspended all form of dredging and mining activities in the state capital.
He said that the Governor Hope Uzodinma made the pronouncement considering the environmental hazard their activities have caused the state in resent time.
According to him, the management of our environment is vested man but repeatedly men ignorantly destroy his environment that was made for his well-being, hence the celebration of world environmental day.
The commissioner also hinted that the government is poised to protect our ecosystem to forestall any damage, as well maintain a Healthy environment.
The Permanent Secretary Ministry of Environment Mrs.Sabina Onwuchi in her speech noted that the theme of this year celebration “Biodiversity” is in line with the state government programme to sustain nature stressing that air pollution, cutting down trees, releasing poisonous gases into the air affect our environment.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of Nigerian Automobile Technicians Association, NATA, Comr. Clinton Azuoma Nnakaji, who is in-charge of all the Mechanics Operating at Avu, expressed delight to witness all the activities of the Ministry of Environment and commended the Commissioner for his developmental giant strides, even as he promised to support the government of day in Imo State led by Gov.Hope Uzodinma.
