Igbo Community In FCT Condemns Illegal 5-Year Detention Of Ozioma Onyeaka, Demands Immediate Release And Compensation By AGF
The Igbo Community Association FCT (ICA FCT), representing over 2.8 million Igbo residents across the Federal Capital Territory, issued an official statement today condemning the continued multi-year detention of Ozioma Elizabeth Onyeaka at the Wawa Military Detention Center in Kainji, Niger State.
The statement signed by Nze Engr Ikenna Ellis-Ezenekwe, the President General of the Igbo Community Association in FCT said: “Onyeaka, an indigene of Anambra State, was apprehended over five years ago in Onitsha by law enforcement officers and subsequently held without formal charge, access to legal representation, or communication with her family. Relatives only learned of her survival following a recent appearance at the Federal High Court in Abuja.”
“It is heartless to have treated a fellow Nigerian in such a way,” said Nze [Engr] Ikenna Ellis-Ezenekwe, President General of the ICA FCT. “It is shameful for such inhumane treatment to be meted out to this young woman under a constitutional democratic dispensation. It reflects a concerning disregard for basic human rights within certain echelons of law enforcement.”
The statement co signed also by Mazi Chinwoke Emmanuel Onah, Secretary General, Igbo Community Association FCT said in light of these findings, the Igbo Community Association FCT formally presents the following demands to the Federal Government and the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF):
1. Immediate Release: An executive order from the Attorney General of the Federation directing the immediate release of Ozioma Elizabeth Onyeaka from military custody.
2. Compensation and Medical Care: Comprehensive financial restitution, formal public apologies, and immediate specialized medical treatment to address the severe physical and psychological toll of her prolonged confinement.
3. Formal Investigation: The immediate launch of a transparent administrative panel to investigate the circumstances surrounding her arrest and transfer, alongside the prosecution of all officers liable for illegal detention.
4. Cabinet Intervention: A direct call on prominent South-East political leaders serving within the current administration—including Minister of Works David Umahi—to intervene directly in securing justice for Onyeaka.
“We believe the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation is a humane institution capable of taking swift, appropriate action to rectify this injustice and ease the distress felt across the Igbo community,” said Mazi Chinwoke Emmanuel Onah, Secretary General of the ICA FCT. “We remain deeply pained by this systemic failure.”
