Hadejia Emirate Development Association HEDA) has lent it’s voice to those criticising government for not doing what it takes against the perennial flooding that has been causing untold hardship to people living in Hadejia local government area of Jigawa state.
Also, an elder statesman Baba Ishaq Hadejia accused the serving minister of water resources Eng. Sulaiman Hussain Adamu and the executive director of the Hadejia Jama’are River Basin Development Authority (HJRBDA) Mr. Ma’amun Da’u Aliyu over their nonchalant attitude towards sympathizing with victims across the state.
The chairman of HEDA group Alhaji Abdullahi Sarki Kafinta in a press briefing they held yesterday expressed dismay towards the lackadaisical attitude of the government toward addressing the perennial occurrence of water flooding the area.
Alhaji Sarki also blamed the residents for their age-long attitude of dumping refuse directly within drainages that eventually causes blockages.
HEDA says the Hadejia river basin authority that is saddled with the responsibility of controlling the flow of water from Challawa and Tiga dams in Kano from overflowing its water by wreaking havoc on people’s land has become a shadow of itself.
He pleaded with the government to intervene in waving aside loans collected by farmers to allow them to recuperate from the loss of their farm produce and also suggested that the affected farmers be given free seeds and fingerlings to alleviate the sufferings.
Meanwhile the state governor Alhaji Muhammed Badaru Abubakar has visited the 5 emirs and sympathies with them on the flood incidence.
The governor expressed dismay that the areas have consistently been affected by flood assuring that the state government through SEMA will continue to assess and record data of those affected so that support may be given to them.
