Flood Alert: Obiano Charges Flood Prone Communities To Use IDP Camps

Gov Willie Obiano has said that his administration has established 28 Centres for Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs, victims of the predicted 2016 flooding, across all the flood-prone communities and councils in the state in response for any emergency.

The Governor disclosed this at the Anambra State Fire and Safety Summit held yesterday at the Prof Dora Akunyili Women Development Center, Awka during his opening remarks.

According to him, the strategically located camps have been equipped with basic necessities for inmates to live normal lives for a reasonable period of time.

Gov Obiano affirmed that flood was imminent this year, revealed that in its usual proactive manner,  his administration had established the Camps in readiness for any eventuality as well as engaged critical stakeholders on safety measures and what is required of them should the flood come.

The engagement he noted were in the form of sensitization activities through the media and town hall meetings, adding that the result is a better informed citizenry who are conscious of how to handle emergencies when they occur.

He stressed the need for residents of the flood-prone communities to embrace Insurance Covers so as to assist cushion the effects of any negative losses and urged them not to toy with the issue of flood but to heed any directive from the authorities to move to the IDP Camps when their homes are threatened.

Dr Nnamdi Iloduba,  President of the Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria, (ISPON)which partnered the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA)to organize the summit, said that through the Summit, they were heeding the call by the State Government for gainful partnership across board towards the pursuit and realization of the overall well-being of Ndi Anambra.
