20 Soldiers Still “Missing In Action”
Facts are beginning to emerge on how members of the Boko Haram sect were able to overrun a military camp in Malam Fatori on August 4.
Though the spokesman of the military Joint Task Force, JTF stated that the attack was repelled and that 32 terrorists, 2 soldiers and one policeman lost their lives, it was later revealed that 12 soldiers and 7 policemen actually died. Revelations have also emerged that some soldiers are still “missing” and are yet to be accounted for.
Street Journal gathered that one of the camps, code-named Section 4 Camp came under attack around 5.30 am as the terrorists caught the soldiers by surprise. Military sources confirmed that the insurgents surrounded the camp and launched their attack from different frontiers. Apart from the surprise factor, the soldiers were at a disadvantage, having been surrounded by the enemy who seemed to also have superior fire power. .
Some of the soldiers on ground were overwhelmed and they fled as far as Niger Republic as the terrorists reportedly gave them a hot chase. Street Journal also gathered that the insurgents had enough time to pack some of the weapons of the military forces.
Men of the JTF regrouped and launched a well coordinated attack through which the control of one of the camps was regained.
Meanwhile, not less than 20 soldiers have been reported missing with their weapons. To worsen the situation, a rescue mission could not be immediately launched for fear of ambush as the terrorists still control a part of the camp. Though the men have been declared “missing in action”, the belief in camp is that they have probably been killed.
Lt Col Sagir Musa, the spokesman of the JTF could not be reached for comments as of the time of filing this report.
