Explosives And Ammunitions Used During The Civil War In Imo State Found And Detonated By Police

Imo State Police Command says it uncovered some war weapons used during the civil war that took place from 1967 to 1970, forty-three years after. According to the command, different sizes of bombs, Improved Explosives Devices (IEDs) and other allied materials which were abandoned in the state during the 30 months civil war were detonated.
Addressing newsmen, state commissioner of Police, Mr. Mohammed Katsina said; “Some of the recovered bombs, IEDs and allied materials include old war time ammunition from the old military trench at Okigwe Local Government Area, five primed IEDs recovered from the scene of a robbery at one of the new generation banks in Ezinihitte Mbaise.”

Furthermore the CP added that 10 old war time military bombs were also recovered at a road construction site in Ogbaku, Mbaitoli Local Government Area, six bombs were found at Ohoba, Ohaji/Egbema Local council area and some IEDs from a generating plant environment at Okigwe.
Speaking further Mohammed said that four primed IEDs and one hand held grenade were recovered from an abandoned vehicle were used by robbers along Okigwe Road, Owerri.
“We also recovered six pump action guns, 61 canons, six bags of gun powder and chemicals. It is important to sound a note of warning that people should report the presence of strange objects to the nearest police station for immediate action.”

Other things recovered by the command included an IED built inside a fire extinguisher, a rocket launcher, five electro-magnetic war time bombs and six hand held grenades from a road construction site at Orlu, adding that it could not ascertain if those weapons were dumped by the federal troops or the then Biafra fighters.
