Boko Haram fighters have killed the commander of the Hunters Association in Adamawa State, Bukar Jimeta, and three of his men.
Jimeta and three of his subordinates died in Dagu, a Borno village along the border with Adamawa after a heavy gun fight with Boko Haram insurgents that lasted throughout Saturday night.
Residents told Daily Trust that the hunters who joined the war against Boko Haram since 2014 had been hunting down militants escaping from Sambisa forest.
A resident, Kayibo Dagu, said the armed insurgents numbering about 200 ambushed the hunters near the village, killing the four of them after a long battle, adding that many Boko Haram fighters also died.
Residents in the surrounding villages said they were awoken by sounds of gunshots coming from the direction of Dagu on Saturday night.
The chairman of the hunters association, Usman Tola, confirmed the incident in a telephone interview with journalists yesterday, saying he had sent a delegation to condole with the family of the deceased.
A female hunter, Aisha Gombi described the loss of her commander as monumental, describing Jimeta’s contribution in the fight against Boko Haram as unquantifiable.
