Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed Abdulkadir, on Wednesday pardoned 73 inmates.
The programme held at the state government house, he described the decision as a constitutional duty guided by compassion and justice.
The governor said that the 73 pardoned inmates were selected based on their age, health conditions, length of sentence served, minor offences, and demonstrated remorse.
He said that mercy complements justice and provides deserving individuals with an opportunity for rehabilitation and reintegration into society.
The governor also approved financial support for compensation, palliatives, and transportation to ease reintegration, urging beneficiaries to embrace responsible conduct and avoid returning to crime.
While Hassan Elyaqub, who is the state attorney general and chairman of the council for prerogative of mercy, said that before the 73 were pardoned, 117 applications were also reviewed.
One of the pardoned inmates, Musa Muhammad, expressed their appreciation to the governor for the pardon.
Muhammad promised that all of them will be good ambassadors for the development of their societies, Bauchi State, and Nigeria as a whole.
