The management of the Abubakar Tafawa-Balewa University (ATBU) on Monday directed students to leave school over a protest by some students.

This was contained in a press release signed by the deputy registrar of the university, Hajiya Fatima Inuwa Abdullahi, and made available to Newsmen in Bauchi.

The press release said that the Vice Chancellor of the University, professor Abdulzeez on behalf of the Senate has approved the closure of the University for an initial period of one week with immediate effect.

The management closed the school as a result of students protesting at the University gate over the death of their 500-level colleague, Joseph Agabaidu, of the Department of Geology.

“Therefore, I am directed to request all undergraduate students on both campuses, to vacate the University premises with immediate effect as failure to comply may lead to appropriate sanction by the constituted authority,” the statement stated.

The protest started around 8: 00 am at Yelwa gate with a heavy presence of police who prevented the students from coming outside the University campus by shutting the gate.

They tried to disperse the students with tear gas while the students in turn blocked the entrance of the Yelwa Campus.
