Appoint A Rector Within The Polytechnic System Or Our Gate Would Be Shut Down, ASUP Chairman Tells Al-Makura

The reelected chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic Useni Paul Fatiye has advice the Nasarawa State Government to do justice to the law establishing the Polytechnic system to appoint a staff of Polytechnic as the Rector or risk a total shutdown of the institution.

Paul stated this in his acceptance speech marking the inauguration of a new executive of the Academic Staff Union of the Polytechnic.

The chairman applauded the Academic Staff Union members for their doggedness and resilience.

He listed some of the hiccups of the then headship of the Polytechnic to include negligence to National Housing Fund, non-release of the fund to beneficiaries of TETFUND staff training and development (further studies), payment of arrears of 31 staff that were not captured during the first screening exercise.

“The interference of ASUP has made an impact by putting the issue to rest”.

“Under our reign, we succeeded in organizing a well-attended conference, establishment of a functional website, 2 publications of ASUP Journal.

Paul appreciated the holistic effort of the state government to repositioned tertiary institutions in the state through the constitution of Investigative Panel and Fact Findings committees in the three existing tertiary institutions.

The Chairman also urged the state governor, Umaru Tanko Al-Makura to leave above board by ensuring that the recommendations of the committees are implemented.

He also revealed some of the hurdles of the institution to include non-accreditation of courses.

“We also have a problem with lack of internet facilities and payment of pension and gratuity.

He called on the governor, Umaru Tanko Al-Makura to consider tertiary institutions in the area of pension and gratuity.

The Acting Rector, Augustine Ali Gabu applauded ASUP for organizing a free, fair and credible election.

Appealing to the Union to dialogue with the state government, saying is the only solution to the lingering impasse.

Even as he called for a collaborative effort between management and ASUP.

The chairman Joint Union of Tertiary Institutions, Arik Bashayi said the state government should do the needful to avert any shutdown of the system.

Saying the implementation of 2014, 2015, 2016 promotion would go a long way in addressing around of strike.
