Ademola Adeleke has been re-elected as governor of Osun State for a second term, defeating his closest challenger, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Adeleke, the candidate of the Accord Party, was declared the winner of Saturday’s governorship election on Sunday morning following the completion of the collation of results in Osogbo, the state capital.
Declaring the results, Joshua Ogunwole, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) returning officer for the election, said Adeleke polled 511,067 votes to emerge victorious.
Oyebamiji came second with 444,815 votes, while Najeem Salaam of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) finished third with 17,180 votes.
Adeleke won in 19 local government areas, while Oyebamiji secured victory in 11 LGAs.
The election was held amid heightened tension following reports of violence and attacks in the build-up to the poll.
Despite the concerns, the election recorded significant voter turnout, with large crowds reported at several polling units.
Although voting was largely peaceful, there were reports of journalist harassment and disruptions in some locations.
Voting commenced early across many parts of the state, but technical glitches with the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) caused delays in the conclusion of voting at some polling units.
The election was also characterised by reported cases of vote-buying and alleged voter intimidation in parts of the state.
