The North Central Zone coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Malam Muhammad Abdussalam, said; “so far seven children have been confirmed death, while five others who have sustained injuries have been taking to specialist hospital.”
A one story building housing an Islamic School on Sunday evening at about 5:30 PM collapsed with pupils inside, the incident which happened at Bukuru in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State as over forty students were taking lessons in the school.
Confirming the incident to our correspondent at scene of the accident NEMA’s said their men are still carrying out the rescue mission and promised give more details.
A local source within the community said the pupils were seating and taking lectures when the building suddenly collapsed on them.
The source Alahji Danlami Muhammad said; “I cannot give details of the casualties as at now because as you can hear the noise from the crowd that are trying to rescue them,” but there were no less than 40 children inside when the building collapsed, adding that rainfall has made most of the children not to attend the school “today.”
He however added that those that were seating upstairs sustained injuries when the building collapsed, “while those inside the ground classes are the ones that some of them died.”
He could not give figures, saying; “we are still working trying to see how we can rescue the others that are trapped.”
Muhammad said the incident occurred at an Islamiyya school along Gero road in Bukuru, he gave the name of the school as Abu Naib Islamic school.
It was gathered that the School was a secondary school, but Islamic studies lessons are thought every Saturday and Sundays of the weekends.
The Executive Governor of Plateau State the Rt. Hon. Barr. Simon Bako Lalong has said it received with a heavy heart the news of the collapse of the Abu – Ni’ima Islamiyya School, Gyero Junction Bukuru on Islamic Disciples on Quranic Training.
In a statement signed Director of Press Affairs Mr. Nanle Emmnuel said the building collapsed on the Students at about 5:20 pm during the heavy down pour of rainfall over the Jos Bukuru Metropolis resulting in the death of 4 (four) of the Almajiris on the spot while 24 (Twenty four) others injured were rushed to the Bingham Hospital (Jankwano), Plateau Specialist Hospital, and Sunnah Hospital all in Jos for immediate medical attention.
In response to the emergency; the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), the Nigeria Police and Government Officials acting on the instruction of the Governor immediately mobilize to site to ensure the immediate evacuation of any person or persons likely to have been trapped in the debris.
The Governor expresses deep concern for this loss of lives which brings to bear the necessity to ensure that public buildings conform to building standards and the need for them to be certified fit to accommodate students in training.
In this wise the Governor has assured that all Agencies of Government saddled with the responsibility of ensuring that all public buildings particularly schools are fit for use; are up and doing in ensuring the safety of these structures.
Similarly, the Governor wishes to assure the citizenry of Plateau State that the unfortunate incidence in the Tudun Wada Area during the early hours of the day concerning the right of way and issues surrounding the blockade of roads during worship which almost resulted in the breakdown of law and order have been brought under control by the swift response of the members of the Operation Safe Heavens and the Nigeria Police.
While commending the Security Operatives for their swift response, the Governor further pleads with the entire citizenry and particularly residents of Tudun Wada Area to Exercise Restrain and to show a sustained commitment to consolidating on the peace building efforts of the Government through accommodation, mutual understanding and peaceful co-existence.
The Governor is optimistic that the current security challenges been faced will be surmounted through the sincere collective effort of the entire citizenry and this he believes is already yielding result since his assumption of office, for which he calls on the entire people of Plateau to sustain.”
