We Don’t Know Number Of Policemen In Nigeria, Inspector General Of Police, Police Affairs Minister Tells Senate

The Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, and the Minister of Police Affairs, Alhaji Mohammed Dingyadi, have told the Senate that there is no clear record of the number of policemen in Nigeria.

Adamu and Dingyadi made this known when they and the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, Musliu Smith, appeared the Senate Committee on Appropriation.

Adamu was represented by the Commissioner of Police (Budget).

The Chairman, Senate Committee on Police, Haliru Jika, informed the lawmakers about the development, while presenting the budget of police before the Appropriation Committee.

Speaking before the Committee, Dingyadi said: “The recruits are not on the pay roll of the Police.

“They are student-in-training.

“They are only qualified to be on the pay roll of the police once they pass out from training.”

Also in his own submission, Smith said it is only the Force Headquarters that can provide the number of policemen in Nigeria.

On the Senate’s official verified Twitter handle, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriation, Senator Jubril Barau, who expressed dissatisfaction with the situation, said if the lawmakers conducted an investigation, it will be discovered that all figures provided by police will not be correct.

According to Barau: “We should have a situation where we will have all the data of the Nigerian Police Force.

“Let us give them time.

“If we are to investigate further, all the figures provided to us by the Nigerian Police Force will not be correct, since the Minister has agreed that very soon a computerized system will be made available to capture the entire figures of personnel in the Nigerian Police Force.”
