Voters Registration: POSN Hails Judiciary, Urges INEC Not To Appeal Judgement

The Peter Obi Support Network (POSN) has applauded the judiciary for Tuesday’s ruling mandating the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to immediately resume the continuous voters registration exercise and allow it to run until 90 days before the 2023 general elections.

The group in a statement released after the judgement of the Federal High Court sitting in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja, said: “Today’s decision by the court has once again shown that the judiciary is the last hope of the common man.”

POSN urged INEC not to appeal the judgement in order not to waste time on needless legal jamboree since the law is clear on the matter.

The statement signed by POSN’s Director of Communications Emeka Kalu reads in part: “Peter Obi Support Network is elated by the decision of the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, mandating the Independent National Electoral Commission to immediately proceed with the voters registration exercise.

“Today’s decision by the Federal High Court is commendable as it once again proves that the judiciary is the last hope of the common man. We urge the electoral body not to appeal the judgement in order not to waste time on needless legal jamboree since the law is clear on the matter. In any case, what does INEC stand to gain by denying eligible voters the right to participate in the 2023 general elections? An appeal is unnecessary unless if INEC has a hidden agenda.”

POSN implored INEC “to always comply with the provisions of the law in carrying out its responsibilities because Nigeria is not a banana republic where anything goes. INEC’s decisions must at all times be guided by the country’s extant laws and not by emotion.”

“This,” according to the group, “is necessary in order to assure everyone that the commission is determined to be an impartial electoral umpire and that the 2023 elections will be free and fair.”

Recall that the suit was filed by members of Peter Obi Support Network (POSN) on August 4, 2022 and came up today for Judgement.
