Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal has approved the establishment of School of Basic and Remedial Studies to address continuous decline in the number and quality of students from Sokoto State sitting for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
The decision to establish the school was part of the recommendation of a committee headed by former INEC chairman, Professor Attahiru Jega, set up to look into ways and means of reviving higher education in the old Sokoto state, which now comprises of Sokoto, Zamfara and Kebbi.
Consequently, the state Council on Emergency in Education adopted the recommendation and gave the go-ahead for the establishment of the school.
“The school will offer quality training, by qualified teachers, to shore up student’s basic skills to prepare them for examinations leading to university admissions,” a statement issued by Tambuwal’s spokesman, Malam Imam Imam, said.
It said the school will be equipped with requisite laboratories, classrooms and other top other facilities to enhance learning.
With this development, all higher institutions of learning in the state have been directed to stop conducting remedial programmes for senior school certificate examination (SSCE), and IJMB.
“The new school will run remedial programmes for SSCE and run IJMB as entry requirement into universities.
