The Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN) is ordering its members to commence immediate audit of all dispensing pumps in the country.
The action was sequel to the directive issued by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA).
The Authority had said it has observed incidents of under-dispensing of petroleum products at retail outlets nationwide, describing it a gravious and intolerable breach of consumer trust in Nigeria
It therefore directed all retail outlet operators to carry out immediate calibration and verification of all dispensers and totalizers in order to protect the interests of consumers
It further said it has intensified inspections and enforcement activities and warned that outlets found under-dispensing will face immediate corrective actions and persistent or serious violations will be subject to appropriate sanctions, up to and including revocation of the outlet’s license.
In a circular dated September 22, 2026, signed by National President Prince Billy Gillis-Harry and National Secretary Barr. Adedibu Aderibigbe, PETROAN urged members to treat the directive of the Authority with requisite seriousness.
“As one of the associations specifically requested by the NMDPRA to notify its members and support full compliance, PETROAN hereby urges all members to treat this directive with the utmost seriousness and ensure immediate compliance across all retail outlets under their management,” PETROAN said.
The association advised members to conduct immediate inspection, calibration and verification of dispensing equipment, maintain accurate records of calibration and maintenance activities and cooperate fully with regulatory inspection teams.
It also implored its members to uphold the highest standards of transparency, integrity and consumer protection in all retail operations.
It expressed commitment to promoting professionalism, regulatory compliance, and best industry practices.
It added: “Together, we must continue to protect the interests of consumers and preserve the credibility and reputation of petroleum retail operations throughout Nigeria.”
