UN Set To Award Nigeria Security And Civil Defence Corps Commandant-General

Mallam Abdullahi Gana Muhammadu, the Commandant-General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), has been nominated as one of  the 20 people across the world to be awarded by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Gutteries, with United Nations Public Service Awards (UNPSA) in New York, United States, early next year.

 

The award, which was inaugurated in 2003 was instituted to recognise excellence in public service across the world  and support innovations in public service delivery with the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

 

According to the statement  signed by the Secretary of the Centre for Convention on Democratic Integrity Inc, in Maryland, US, Dr. Leke Alao, on behalf of civil society coalition revealed that it was the coalition that nominated the Commandant-General, Mallam Abdullahi Gana Muhammadu, for his examplary leadership qualities with which he has been piloting the affairs of the Corps since his assumption of office in 2015.

 

The Plateau State Commandant of the NSCDC  Dr. Olasupo A. Solomon, in a congratulatory message to the Commandant-General, remarks that Mallam Abdullahi Gana Muhammadu is the first Nigerian officer to be honoured with the UNPSA award. He described him as an indefatigable boss, whose passionate commitment to defending the defenceless, is a source of motivation for the rank and file of the Corps.

 

Dr. Olasupo, also notes that the UN’s award is also coming at a time when the Commandant-General has just been recently  nominated as a KNIGHT by the International Civil Defence Organisation. (ICDO), the global body of Civil Defence organizations. He said this auspicious occasion of double honours, for the Commandant-General will further inspire officers and men of the Corps to re-dedicate themselves to their statutory duties.

 

According to Dr. Olasupo, the NSCDC will not relent in its efforts at  ensuring the protection of the civil populace and safeguarding property and the environment from natural or man-made disasters as well as protecting the country’s critical national assets and infrastructures.
