It was indeed a black Wednesday, October 29, 2025, in Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State, as tragedy struck following the fatal shooting of a member of the local vigilante group, Mr. Israel Ewuzie, popularly known as Araka.
He was allegedly shot dead by another vigilante operative, Mr. Ebere, also known as Eby Boy, from Orogwe Community.
The unfortunate incident has thrown the neighboring communities of Ndegwu and Orogwe into mourning, leaving residents in shock and disbelief.
The deceased, Mr. Ewuzie, fondly called Azaman the Playmaker, hailed from Umuekenekpu Village in Ndegwu Community.
He was described as a man of integrity and goodwill, deeply admired by elders, youths, and children alike.
His sudden and violent death has left his family, friends, and the entire community in deep grief.
Community members who spoke with The Pressman Newspaper expressed sadness over the tragedy, describing the deceased as a peace-loving and cheerful individual who served his community diligently through the vigilante network.
As at the time of filing this report, the actual cause of the shooting remains unclear.
However, local sources confirmed that security operatives have commenced a full-scale investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure justice is served.
The remains of Mr. Israel Ewuzie (Araka) have been deposited at a nearby mortuary, while community leaders have appealed for calm, urging residents to allow lawful authorities to handle the matter appropriately.
To verify the authenticity of the incident, The Pressman Newspaper made several telephone calls to residents of Ndegwu Community, who confirmed that the tragedy occurred shortly after a burial ceremony in the area.
According to reliable local sources, the incident involved two vigilante operatives, the deceased, Mr. Israel Ewuzie (Araka) from Ndegwu, and his colleague, Mr. Ebere (Eby Boy) from Orogwe. Both men were reportedly attempting to separate a group of quarrelling youths when the situation turned fatal.
Eyewitness accounts revealed that Eby Boy, whose rifle was already cocked, allegedly tried to fire a warning shot into the air to disperse the crowd.
In the process of attempting to intimidate the youths, he mistakenly pulled the trigger, discharging a live bullet at close range into the chest of his Ndegwu counterpart, Araka.
The victim was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital but was reportedly rejected due to the severity of his injuries.
While efforts were being made to transfer him to another medical facility for urgent treatment, Araka tragically succumbed to his wounds and died on the way.
The heartbreaking incident has thrown both Ndegwu and Orogwe communities into deep mourning, sparking widespread calls for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the avoidable tragedy.
Observers and concerned citizens have once again expressed strong opposition to the arming of untrained individuals under the guise of community security, warning that such practices continue to endanger lives and peace across Imo State.
They emphasized the urgent need for community leaders to review the recruitment and arming of vigilante personnel, insisting that only properly trained and supervised security agents should be allowed to bear firearms to prevent further loss of innocent lives.
As at the time of filing this report, the Imo State Police Command is yet to make any official statement regarding the incident.
May the soul of Mr. Israel Ewuzie, also known as Araka, rest in perfect peace.
