deltastatelogoThere was tension in Oghara, Ethiope West Local Government of Delta State, after a 19-year-old teenager, identified only as Onome, allegedly hacked his 85-year-old grandfather to death.

Universalreporters247.com learnt that the incidence, which left Papa Odedeh, as he was fondly called, lifeless in the pool of his blood, occurred in the residence of the deceased which he shared with his grandson following a misunderstanding that ensued between the latter (Onome) and his father whose name was not known as at press time.

When our correspondent visited the scene of the crime, the corpse had been deposited in an undisclosed morgue but a large crowd, believed to be members of a Christian group, was seen saying words of prayers and consoling some women who later claimed to be relatives and of the deceased.

The cap which the deceased was said to have worn in preparation for his outing was seen beside his old mud house while the door of his room was shut with no one inside.

A family member, who refused to be named, opened the door for our correspondent who observed heaps of sand, which were used to cover the already coagulated blood, in many parts of the room as well as blood stains on the chairs and other house wares.

Narrating the incidence, the family member said Papa Odedeh had returned home that evening, after the day’s job, and was set to go out for an unknown reason when his assailant made efforts to deter him from going out.

Onome, it was gathered, had alleged that the deceased was under the influence of alcohol and was going out for another round, hence, the wanted to bar him from going out that ill-fated evening in order to save the name of the family from his alleged regular disgrace after being drunk.

He said he observed that as the struggle between the duos continued unabated, Onome allegedly took an axe and hacked the octogenarian’s left leg with it. This was immediately followed by a profuse bleeding which left Papa Odedeh in sharp pains and uncontrollable agony as he kept on saying that “Onome has finally killed me” in the Urhobo language.

Realizing the magnitude of what he had done, Onome was alleged to have hid himself in a nearby bushy path to watch oncoming Samaritans who trooped in to know what was happening in the area. He was also said to have prevented his younger cousin, who witnessed the incident, from calling for help, threatening to send him to his own grave if he did.

The deceased, it was gathered, had, on several occasions, decried the spate of threat of attacks being launched on him by the grandson and was quoted as saying that if he dies, his grandson-turned-assailant should be held responsible. However, not many people took his words seriously until his demise.

Many sympatisers, who could not hold back their tears, rained immeasurable curses on the alleged murderer, even as investigations reveal that men of the Nigeria Police attached to that Division had commenced investigations into the matter.
