Rabiu Omaku

The vice president of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN)  in charge of North Central, Danmusa Mohammed has advocated for revitalization of traditional and community sports across the country.

He lamented the extinction of such sports as Dambe, Kokuwa or community wrestling Wasan Gora and ayo among others and enjoined traditional and community leaders to set the tone for its resuscitation.

Muhammed who made these remarks as a guest on Nasarawa Broadcasting Service, NBS TV programme Sports 360, equally made a case for immediate resuscitation of school sports at both primary and secondary schools levels.

He said grassroots sports development remains the key to realising economic and social development, arguing that raw talents to be discovered hold the potential for transforming the nations cultural and traditional identity.

Mohammed challenged well spirited individuals, corporate organisations and other stakeholders to compliment government’s sustained investment in sports by creating platforms for youth to realise their full potentials in the sector.

According to him, SWAN operates on an improved setting with emergence of a more committed leadership and would strive to improve sports reportage and contribution to its development particularly at the grassroots level.

He solicited for support and partnership with the association to enable it achieve its objectives through training and retraining to catch up with current trends in professional sports reportage.
