Mahrez Retires From International Football After Algeria’s World Cup Ouster

Algeria captain Riyad Mahrez has announced his retirement from international football following his country’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Desert Foxes bowed out of the tournament after a 2-0 defeat to Switzerland in the Round of 32 on Thursday, bringing the 35-year-old’s distinguished international career to an end.

Reflecting on his journey with the national team after the match, Mahrez said representing Algeria had fulfilled a lifelong ambition.

He said: “There were good times and difficult times as well, of course.

That’s part of a career. “But representing Algeria has been a dream of mine ever since I was young, to play for my country. It’s been an immense honor and a great source of pride.’

The former Manchester City winger also confirmed it was time for a new generation to take over. “It is the new generation’s turn to play.”

Before leaving the pitch, Mahrez acknowledged Algeria’s supporters by giving a thumbs-up, patting his heart and waving to the fans.

The Al-Ahli forward ends his international career with 119 appearances and 40 goals for Algeria, the second-highest totals in the country’s history.

Mahrez played a key role in Algeria’s run to the knockout stage, scoring twice and providing an assist in the team’s thrilling 3-3 draw against Austria during the group phase.

He also helped Algeria win the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, cementing his place among the nation’s greatest footballers.

At club level, Mahrez enjoyed a trophy-laden career, winning five Premier League titles, one with Leicester City and four with Manchester City, before adding the UEFA Champions League crown with City.
