Review police remuneration regularly, IGP tells wages commission

 

The Inspector-General of Police, Abubakar Adamu, has asked the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission to ensure a regular review of the remuneration of officers of the Nigeria Police Force.

 

Adamu also asked the commission to review the pensions of police officers regularly as this would bring greater motivation to the men and women of the force.

 

The police boss said these when he led a delegation to the office of the Acting Chairman of the NSIWC, Ekpo Nta, according to a statement issued in Abuja on Monday by the commission’s Chief Press Secretary, Emma Njoku.

 

The statement read in part, “The IGP extensively briefed the commission on the current status and the need for a regular review of the conditions of service, remunerations, and pensions of the police.

 

 

 

“This is in order to maximize its effectiveness and adequately motivate its personnel.”

 

Adamu added that due to the ongoing security challenges and manpower constraints, police personnel was being made to work beyond approved hours of shift duties.

 

In his response, Nta said the commission had always given serious consideration and understanding in recommending remuneration packages for the police and other related institutions.

 

The acting chairman was quoted as saying, “It is worthy of note that at the last negotiations for the consequential adjustment of salaries arising from the National Minimum Wage Act 2019, the commission in recognition of their selfless sacrifices for the country, also recommended a percentage increase for the police, paramilitary agencies, intelligence community, and the armed forces.”

 

 

Nita said the commission’s position was unanimously endorsed by both the organized labor unions and the Federal Government’s team and approved by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.).

 

He also stated that the commission had embarked on implementing productivity and improvement schemes in the public sector to ensure that increases in salaries and allowances were backed with relative productivity as justification.

 

Nta explained that the commission would soon extend the productivity improvement schemes to the security sector so that governments would have the empirical data they need for continuous positive investments and interventions in this critical sector.
