- Insists he is a bonafide member of APC
Senator Suleiman Othman Hunkuyi, Chairman Senate Committee on National Population and National Identity and representative of Kaduna North Senatorial District in the Nigerian Senate has called on security agents to place some aides of Governor Nasir El-Rufai on security watch list ahead of the All Progressive Congress (APC) ward, local and state congress beginning from May 5, 2018.
Hunkuyi affirmed that he is not under any suspension insisting all his efforts over the years are aimed at deepening democracy in order to enhance good governance
Senator Suleiman made this known in press statement issued on Thursday May 3, 2018.
The statement read below: “The need to issue this press statement becomes imperative in view of the unfolding events and machinations of some self-seeking personalities with the view to thwart the directive of both Mr President and the National Working Committee of our party, the All Progressive Congress, APC as it relates to the conduct of elective congresses at various levels of leadership.
“In this instance, my attention has been drawn to a press statement, purportedly issued by one Yahaya Baba Pate, who is impersonating as the acting State Secretary of the APC. Pate is currently on suspension for 18 months as a result of anti-party activities, with effect from 12/02/2018 alongside Uba Sani, Audu Kwari and Governor Nasir ElRufai. Apart from Pate being on suspension, his tenure of office has also expired on 23rd April, 2018 having been sworn-in on 23rd April, 2014, hence, he lacks the power to act and speak on behalf of our party in any capacity,” Hunkuyi said.
“From all indications, I am a bonafide member of APC, the visit of the Fact Finding Committee set up by the NWC of our party sometime in February, 2018, led by H.E. Segun Oni, further affirms this position.
“On the alleged, attempt by my humble self to undermine the congresses of the party in the state, by this impostor who is acting on the directive of his pay masters, I wish to reiterate the fact that everyone in this state and beyond, knows me as an avowed democrat and firm believer in same. It is pertinently clear to all, that they are on the other hand, who have perfected plans to undermine the democratic process, which guarantees the right of every member to aspire for any position and for them to have freedom of choice to determine who lead our party at the various levels in the over 9.000 vacancies, he said.
He said “This is the main aim of the stakeholders meeting with various stakeholders of our party across the 3 zones of the state recently. The question to be asked here is, how does this constitute threat to entrenched democratic norms and in particular guidelines issued by the NWC and National Convention committee for the conduct of the elective congresses? Who else sensitized the various stakeholders in the state ahead of the party congress?
“It is obvious all the stakeholders meetings were done in full public glare. I hereby, draw the attention of the state congress committee and security agents to watch out with the view to allow party faithful to defend their inalienable right to vote and be voted for in the congresses.
“You may recall what happened last year when similar directive for the conduct of 3-man non-elective congress was entirely breached. They sat down in a room and wrote names of purported winners of elections that were to take place in all the 23 local governments in the state.
“You may also recall series of attacks on my person and that of my followers, notably among them which are the recent assassination attempt on my life and that of Dr. Ahmed Tijjani Ramalan and other people during the stakeholders meeting in the Central Senatorial Zone, held at NUT End-well Hotel, Kaduna on 30/4/2018 where several persons had various degrees of injury.”
“In the same manner, on 30th July, 2017 while addressing a press conference, at NUJ Kaduna in the company of my fellow Senator Shehu Sani and other party stakeholders, a fatal attempt was made on my life and that of those present during the press conference. The special adviser to Governor Nasir El-Rufai, on political matters Uba Sani, Baba Pate were clearly fingered as the master minders of the attack, yet, they were neither interrogated nor arrested till date.
“I have been in politics in Kaduna for over 30 years, the recent style of barbarism and hooliganism in arming young people with guns, daggers and other dangerous weapons to attack perceived political opponents is dangerous and alien to the people of the state, he said,” he lamented.
“Finally, I wish to call on security agents to put Samaila Suleiman, Auwal Yaro Maikyau, Uba Sani, Yusuf Zailani, Col. Yakubu Soja (rtd) and Yahaya Baba Pate on their watch list, as their recent activities portray them as people who are not in touch with political ethos,” Hunkuyi appealed.
