The Plateau State Chapter of the opposition Party has rejected the continued stay in office by the 17 Local Government Areas of Plateau State following the expiration of their tenure as the Executive Chairmen in the State.

The Chairman of the New Nigeria  Peoples  Party, NNPP, Comrade Tokjin  Mandin, in an exclusive interview with our correspondent in Jos, rejected the outcome of the State government twisting the narrative.

He said the tenure of these chairmen expired on 9 September 2026, and the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) has not said anything about it.

Mandin explained that all political parties in the State had fielded candidates for councilor and chairmanship seats, waiting for the pronouncement, but PLASIEC failed to provide clear information on the deadline.

He disclosed why the Plateau State Government wanted to extend the tenure of the chairmen and councilors after the case judgment obtained by the ALGON Chairman in October.

Tokjin Mandin stated that the Plateau State House of Assembly hasn’t amended the new law that can accommodate the incoming elected Chairmen for the three-year tenure in office owing to the judgment of the Plateau State High Court.

He said that, as opposition parties, they cannot accept the decision that the State government would extend their tenure without due process.

We are under democracy so that principle must be followed; if not, Governor Caleb Mutfwang should put a caretaker committee.

According to him, “We are calling on the Plateau people to reject anarchy; we are now practicing democracy, so all the rights of the citizens must be accorded to them at all levels.

“He noted that the opposition would challenge them in court for refusing to do the needful by imposing the chairmen and councilors on the Plateau people.
