As part securing the dignity,peace,progress,unity,development and upholding the academic excellence in their alma mater,the members of the Old Boys Association of Government Secondary School Owerri,GSSO,on Saturday,May 4th 2019 held and concluded association’s 2019 Annual Re-union of the institution.
The event which took place at the school premises along Owerri/Okigwe Owerri attracted so many respected individuals in Nigeria who left from the school after several years and later became members of the GSSO Old Boys Association according to their set ( year of pass out) after 84 years of the establishnent of the alma mater.
The 2019 epoch making event of GSSO Old Boys Association recorded a huge success under the leadership of the National President,Dr.Joseph Nnorom,of 1971 Set,who was the Chief Host of the ceremony.
In an interview with the National President shortly after the official inauguration of the Board of Trustees of the Old Boys Asso.of GSSO,Dr.Nnorom expressed satisfaction upon the academic excellence so far recorded in the school,but encouraged the teachers and students to always maintain and uphold the academic standards of the alma mater which he described as center of excellence in the entire West Africa and in Nigeria.
The National President,Nnorom,furthermore called on the Imo State to improve on the educational input towards the school,but advised the students to study harder and always remember where they came from,where ever they may chance to go to always uphold the supremacy of the institution.
“As an Association of the Old Boys from GSSO,we are poised to assist,protect and encourage the school. Our duties are enormous and we must ensure that development,union and growth of the school,so as to maintain our educational standards. We must support the school management in all ramifications. We are poised to reposition the school. As members of the association,we have attracted numerously especially on the infrastructural development and we are looking forward to add more structures into the school”,says the National President.
Adding his voice,an Old Boy of GSSO,Dr.Paschal Onughaa,of 1980 set,expressed delight to have GSSO as his alma mater.
“I am whatsoever today in the society courtesy of the quality and qualitative education and sound academic background acquired from GSSO. I am must continue to remain very grateful to the foundational members of the school”,Dr.Onughaa revealed.
Some members of the Old Boys Association of GSSO who attended the 2019 re-union includes:the Rector of Federal Polytechnic Nekede Owerri,Rev.Emmanuel Arimanwa,the Director General of the Imo Broadcasting Corporation,IBC,PST.Ralph Afoaku,the Chief Judge of Abia State,Hon.Justice Onuoha Ogwe,of 1979 set,the South East Chief Media Correspondent of Universal Reporters Online,Hon.Engr.Deacon Daniel Opara,aka Danjay,2001 set of GSSO,Hon.Kingsley Osuoha,Dr.Lambert Nnodi,who was the Host and the GSSO Old Boys Asso.Owerri Branch Chairman,Chief Anthony Ugorji,of 1978 set,and Dr.Joe Chibundu,of 1979 set. Other reputable and well meaning Nigerians who are members of the GSSO Old Boys Association are: the Traditional Ruler of Onitsha in Anambra State,HRM Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe,(Agbogidi) Obi of Onitsha in Anambra State,Chief Kingsley Osuoha,aka Enyioha of Owerri,set of 1983,and Barr.Charles Ohaleta,amongst other respected members of the Old Boys Association.
Highlight of the reunion ceremony was the official launching and commissioning of an ultra modern examination hall/bulk class room block ably constructed and built by one of the Old Boys,Owelle Ezeugo Dan Nwandu,of class 1962 set and of the Enugu State Branch as part of giving back to his alma mater.
Also,expressing his profound joy,the National Publicity Secretary of the Old Boys Asso.GSSO,Engr.Chinedu Ukaeru,FMC,thanked all the active members of the union from across the country who contributed in one way or the other towards the successful 2019 Reunion of the Alma Mater and promised continues projection of the school to the global society for the general interest of the school.
Expressively speaking,an Old Boy,Chief Kingsley Osuoha,(Enyioha of Urratta Owerri),said the union is poised at ensuring that the foundation of academic excellence of the alma mater continues as part of giving back to the school.
Chief Osuoha,while speaking encouraged the young students of GSSO to always maintain the academic standard in which they are known for positive and excellent results.
Chief Enyioha moreso promised to always add value towards the growth and development of the alma mater,even as he advised those still in school to desist from any form of social vices that may truncate their future,rather they should embrace discipline as such would guide them become very responsible to the society in the nearest future.
“We are looking forward to see you as leaders of tomorrow”,says Enyioha.
