The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) says Stanley Nwabali has not been ruled out of the Super Eagles’ upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) quarter-clash clash against Angola.
Nwabali, the Eagles’ new first-choice goalkeeper, was injured in the second half of the 2-0 victory over Cameroon in the competition’s second-round match on Saturday.
The Chippa United goalkeeper was harmed following a collision with Cameroonian midfielder Georges-Kévin N’Koudou, and he requested to be substituted.
Providing an update on Nwabali’s situation in a statement on Tuesday, the NFF said the 27-year-old goalkeeper “copped a mild ligament injury” but added that “the doctors have been working on him to see if he will come good in a late fitness test 48 hours before” the clash against Angola.
The statement added that Nwabali “may still be available for selection” for the quarter-final clash.
“Nwabali not ruled out of quarter-final clash with Angola,” the statement reads.
“Nigeria’s new number one, Stanley Nwabali, may still be available for selection for the quarter-final duel with Palancas Negras of Angola if he passes a late fitness test set for Wednesday.
“According to team medics, the 27-year-old copped a mild ligament injury during the Round of 16 battle with the Indomitable Lions on Saturday, and the doctors have been working on him to see if he will come good in a late fitness test 48 hours before the cracker with the southern Africans.”
The Super Eagles will face Angola in the AFCON last eight on Friday by 6pm.
